The Sea Huntress: Death of a Legend Illustration Contest

With the official release on January 21 of the third book in the Sea Huntress series, Pirate's Blood. I would like to announce a contest for illustrations to be used in the fourth book in the series, Death of a Legend.

If you can draw, sketch or paint, you can enter the contest. The author will review all entries and those selected will be used as illustrations in the book. Knowledge of the character's description from any of the books will be helpful, but you are not obligated to purchase any of the books.

There are four different illustrations that I would like to see:

(1) The first illustration is for the cover, which is described as follows: Captain Lancaster holding his wife Cathy close to him with his left arm. In his right hand he is holding a staff with the skull and crossed bone flag fluttering in the breeze. They are standing atop a rocky cliff with the ocean behind them. In the distance, the Sea Huntress can be seen. Underneath the captain's foot is the Tolbrokian flag, which can be seen on the encyclopedia section.

(2) The second illustration will be of the Sea Huntress moving through the water with the sail on the submarine raised, displaying the skull and crossed bones on its side.

(3) The third illustration will be of a Ripper: These were once human beings that are fully covered by a thick mat of hair, which can be either brown or gray. The Ripper's eyes have enlarged so much that the eyelids will no longer close over them. The canine teeth have lengthened, but not so much that they look like a saber tooth tiger. Hands and feet have become more claw like. In addition, Rippers have greater strength than a normal human, so they should appear to be more muscular.

(4)The fourth illustration will be of anyone or thing that is read about in the first three books of the series. For example, the illustration can be of the captain's boats, the Dolphin or the Orca. It can be of the hovercraft, such as the two seat scouts, or the heavily armed and armored Dragon Bat. You can also illustrate other characters from the first three books, except for the captain, Cathy and of course a Ripper.

Submissions do not have to be for all four illustrations. If you want to submit only what you think the Sea Huntress or a Ripper look like, that will be acceptable. The cover #1 illustration must be done in color. Illustrations for #2, #3 and #4 can be done in color, but black and white are preferred. Size can be no larger than 8 by 10 inches. Each illustration submission, must have a signed statement on the back that it is the artist own original work and a release for the illustration to be used in the published book. Persons under the age of eighteen must have a parent or guardian's signature as well. You can find the statement at the bottom of this page. The artist name will be credited next to their illustration.

Entries that are selected will be notified by either e-mail or mail. All submissions will be kept on file by the author for consideration in future publications, at which time the artist will be notified and credit given. The author makes no promises that illustrations will be used in publication, due to the publisher has final say in content of the book. However, all illustrations will be posted on the author's website.

For the submissions that are selected as the best in each of the four illustration categories, the artist will not only receive credit for the artwork, but will receive a signed copy of The Sea Huntress: Death of a Legend when it is released for publication.

Contest will open on March 1, 2008 and will close on September 30, 2008
